Red Blanket Warming Hut
Client: The Forks Corporation

Workshop Architecture’s warming hut design called “Red Blanket” was selected from over 200 entries to the 2014 Winnipeg Warming Huts competition run by The Forks Corporation and Sputnik Architecture. Leah, Tom, Helena and David travelled to Winnipeg in January to help build the installation.

Red Blanket was a visual marker against the surrounding white winter palette. The wall of thick felt could be seen by skaters at a distance. Close up, it protected them from the prevailing winds. Each of the panels was sized to be the width and length of a single roll of bright red felted wool and engineered to hang from a metal rod affixed to the underside of the Historic Rail Bridge, crossing the Assiniboine River. The bottom ends of these monumental-scaled panels were warm blankets for people to wrap themselves in, one or two at a time.
