Princess Elizabeth Public School kindergarten addition and playspace
Client: GRAND ERIE DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Princess Elizabeth Public School's kindergarten addition has an efficient layout that minimized the length and cost of new exterior envelope. The design improved safety, circulation and storage issues in the building as a whole.
The addition turned a dead-end exterior space into a new courtyard play space accessible from both the new and existing kindergartens. The courtyard refurbishment was outside of the original project scope, but with inexpensive finishes (paint, interlock paving and tile) an extra outdoor "room" was created within the projectís modest budget. This new play area replaced the chain-link fence enclosure facing the street that was previously used by the kindergartens.
"The courtyard provides a bonus space that we would not have otherwise had. The entire school benefits from this exciting, bright, cheerful space which sets a positive tone for a wider school revitalization."
