Greenbrier Public School addition and renovation
Client: GRAND ERIE DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
To build an extra kindergarten at Greenbrier Public School, instead of adding another room next to the existing classroom (and thus blocking many windows), we divided the existing class in two and added more space to each side. This way we achieved two “new” classrooms with equal facilities and lots of natural light within the same budget.
Large sliding blackboard doors allow the two classes to work and play together. The new entrance, shared washroom and boot storage ensure that each of the two kindergarten classes have the same level of facilities and the same access to the new playground, designed with Hoyle & Associates landscape architects.
The topography supports an informal outdoor classroom and kindergarten play areas while also providing stormwater management. Details in the design support outdoor teaching opportunities, such as a prefabricated storage shed painted with blackboard paint.
